Final ride of the holiday back to the ferry. Windmills and towns the order of the day. Diksmuide and Veurne were the pick of the crop. Diksmuide delivered a double croque monsieur for lunch whuch fuelled me to the finish. I needed the fuel as I battled a 16mph cross-headwind for the full 135km of essentially flat farmland with no hedges, open canals and coastline! Took it slow and steady and pleased I survived :) | Yes | Garmin Edge 1030 Plus | 14891562311 | 23/06/25 | 14/07/25 | June | Yes

A tour around Dunkirk old town to start then through Bergues, Poperinge, Ypres, Kortrijk which all had ancient town halls and impressive churches. Visits to the Menin Gate, the German cemetery at Langemark and Tyne Cot gave room for reflection. Canals and windmills finished the day off nicely. The only very minor niggle was a slight headwind all the way. Oh, and the Belgian cycling infrastructure, attitude of motorists, lack of litter, quiet country lanes ... is mind-blowingly good. A cycling paradise. | Yes | Garmin Edge 1030 Plus | 14854339147 | 19/06/25 | 14/07/25 | June | Yes

The route is a bastardisation of the Wolf Way - I degravelled it and added in a few extra pretty villages/towns and of course a couple of tile stubs. The villages included Hadleigh, Kersey, Stoke-by-Nayland, Clare, Cavendish, Long Melford, Brent Eleigh and Lavenham. Impromptu visits to see some stunning church interiors were an added bonus. It was very flat with an ever increasing numbers of cars and more aggresive driving styles as one approached London. A tight deadline to reach a couple of indoor plaques and a 4pm curfew for bikes on trains meant we raced through the suburbs which added to the excitement of finishing the trip. How did we do compared to John Richards Lapenotiere? Well, he took 37 hours with a journey distance of 271 miles and changed horses 21 times. We took 4 days riding, 80 hours elapsed, jo bike changes and no punctures. Our moving time was actually quicker than Lapenotiere at 27.5 hours and even elpased ride time was 35.5 hours. We also took a more scenic route which came in at 346miles (554km). | Yes | Garmin Edge 1030 Plus | 9582556125 | 04/08/23 | 14/07/25 | August | Yes

Dorset, Wiltshire and Hampshire had an endless supply of pretty villages lined with thatched cottages. The riding was superb on very quiet well paved roads with rolling rather than super steep terrain. All the climbs gave back the altitude gain with almost no braking required. Kudos to Francis for his patience with me on the hills. In the wheel tracks of Lapenotiere Could John Richards Lapenotiere have imagined, when he hastened to deliver the official dispatches from Vice Admiral Collingwood to his superiors at The Admiralty, that others would follow in his tracks over 200 years later? Or that the way would be marked with story-telling plaques to recount his adventure? Writing this on the return train home. The rest of the group finish the job tomorrow. Another enjoyable day although perhaps not quite as good as Day 1 and 2. The start following the River Don was great, Howden Minster a surprise and seeing the Humber Bridge at the end was impressive. The latter sections were mainly on flattish backroads with a bit of a headwind so didn't have the same draw as the more dramatic lanscapes or off-road sections. A little added drama when my front wheel slid out on a sharp corner in the middle of a flat cornfield. Silly mistake with the penalty quite a badly grazed elbow, bruised hip and shoulder. Could have been worse so small mercies. Passed through lots of pretty villages and towns in both Suffolk and Essex with Finchingfield, Clare and Thaxted standing out. Also a shout out for the friendly pub we stayed in last night, The Compasses Inn. A great excuse to do some proper South Downs exploring. A lot to be enjoyed today. The Old Coach Road rolling along in the shadow of the Downs from Firle to Alfriston was a highlight as was the peace and quiet of riding on the main ridge, I pretty much had the place to myself. I also enjoyed the climb down the steps to ride under the chalk cliffs after Newhaven, not necessary at all but rather fun. Terrain proved challenging with steep rocky ascents and descents requiring a lot of care and concentration. A level or two harder than the Dirty Reiver forestry tracks. All made for slow progress as did the continuous stream of gates. Testing out a few routing options from Canterbury to Reculver, avoiding walk-zones around Margate, and safe passages through Dover and Folkestone. Should have made it back to Canterbury but the freehub failed just outside Folkestone so I freewheeled back down to the station and caught the train. Eventually worked out that if I back-pedalled a lot then I got some bite going forward so was able to make it back to the car park. The train was probably a good option anyway as I had stopped too often to take photos and time had got away from me and a finish in the dark was looming. A couple of tricky tiles bagged into the bargain including a little stroll down Deal Pier (bikes not allowed!). | Yes | Garmin Edge 1030 Plus | 6879002936 | 25/03/22 | 14/07/25 | March | Yes

Relaxed atmosphere, brilliant course, flowing (proper) gravel, hills never too steep, compliant weather, stunning landscape and a very social weekend with good friends. Only the midges on the campsite tried to spoil the fun but Smidge and a (very uncool) head net beat them back. The full 200km route is now firmly on the bucket list. | Yes | Garmin Edge 530 | 5950778783 | 12/09/21 | 14/07/25 | September | Yes

Route 21 from Addington going in. Pretty traffic free but quite fiddly in places so slow going. Not helped by me repeatedly missing turns and u-turning a lot. Plenty of time spent at traffic lights and junctions too - I wasn't the only one to obey them but lots didn't. On the way out from Westminster I initially used Quietway 5 then local cycle routes around Mitcham before finally switching to Route 20/Avenue Verte. This seemed to flow better than the way in and felt more picturesque too. Took care crossing Clapham Common as lots of pedestrians enjoying Sunday afternoon strolls. In between I took the opportunity to bag new tiles in and around Dulwich. | Yes | Garmin Edge 1030 Plus | 5798097616 | 15/08/21 | 14/07/25 | August | Yes
